How to get to Positano

Figuring out how to get to Positano can actually be a pain in the butt. Due to it’s somewhat remote, highly elevate location, traveling there isn’t easy. The main area of Positano is located along the Amalfi coast. Positano is often confused with Amalfi, a different city along the Amalfi coast. The largest international airport closest to Positano is the Naples airport located about 2 hours from Positano.

How to get to Positano from the Naples Airport

To get to Positano you have three main options:

1. Private driver

  • Pro: Fast and stress free. No need to worry about directions, navigating those windy cliff-side roads or transporting your luggage around.
  • Con: It is expensive and only a one time thing. After being dropped off, you’re on your own.

2. Train/Bus

  • Pro: Very inexpensive. There is some accuracy of going where you’d like to go.
  • Cons: Public transportation isn’t very reliable due to the change in schedule that depends on the season. Make sure you get an updated schedule. It’s also very annoying to lug around heavy baggage with trains or buses.

3. Rent a car

How to: You can rent a car from home via the internet. Make sure you have a valid international driving license or else you wont be given a car, even if you reserved and paid for one.

  • Pro: Fast. Relatively inexpensive if traveling with more than one person. Makes for a customized trip. You can make your own schedule and adjust to situations accurately. Easy to carry and transport luggage around. And you can listen to Christ Brown in the car.
  • Con: Need an international drivers license. The driver needs a credit card. They will hold a large security deposit on your credit card until the car is returned in one piece, which, might not even be possible due to the difficulty level of this drive.

How I got to Positano

For my trip we decided to rent a car since we, i mean I, had so much luggage  and  wanted to visit multiple cities.

WARNING AVOID: Do not rent with Sicily by Car rental agency. They Suck. The service is crazy bad and unprofessional not to mention slow. They’re rude to all their customers. I’d just avoid them.

Renting a car is absolutely the most convenient and cheapest option to get to Positano for EXPERIENCED DRIVERS! I’m from LA, I’ve lived in Korea and Japan and when I tell you, “This road is tough”, I ain’t jokin. I’m talking about non-stop winds and turns up high, down an extremely narrow, uneven road guarded by a thin metal rail along the mountain side to help decorate your car as it goes over the cliff. Not to mention the countless confusing roundabouts and speeding cars/ motorcycles in both directions, following no rules whatsoever! This drive is extremely dangerous but also, extremely beautiful. The views from along the coast are breathtaking. It’s nice to be able to stop and enjoy your time as you please.

Tips for driving:

1. Get navigation

2. Travel outside of the busy hours

3. Rent the smallest car you can get

4. Slow down before turns along the mountain side since the road is only big enough for one car it’s dangerous to go too quickly around turns.

5. Download google maps for the area your traveling before hand in order see the map without WiFi just in case.

To download maps that can be viewed off line follow these steps:

Step 1. Go to Google maps

Step 2. Type the location for the area you wish to download

Step 3. Click on the menu button in the left hand corner

Step 4. Go to “Offline maps”

Step 5. Click on “Custom map”

Step 6. Adjust the box for the are you want to download

Step 7. Press Download

Step 8. Once downloaded you can use that map anytime regardless of WiFi for 30 days

Depending on where you are staying you might have free hotel parking, a designated parking area, paid parking or you might have to find street parking. I recommend finding this information out a head of time since parking can be very tricky and limited. For information on where to stay click here

Google maps said it would take about 1 hour and 30 minutes by car but it took us about 3 hours due to traffic, crazy roads and  detours due to the main highway being closed. If you’re headed back to the airport I suggest leaving very early to give yourself enough time.
