Southern Italy Amalfi

Visit Amalfi during your southern Italy stay

The ideal Southern Italy Itinerary: Naples, Pompei, Positano, Amalfi

So, you want to explore the southern part of Italy? Ready to go past Rome? Then keep reading.

For this trip it’s best to rent a car. Although, local transportation is an option, for convenience, a car would be better. These places are located in somewhat remote areas that are a bit difficult to access. Also, with a not so frequent number of public transportation options daily your schedule could get stressful. Just make sure to plan accurately.

Start Here: Naples

Naples, the birthplace of pizza! Naples not only has pizza they have a larger International airport where you can fly into and start your journey. I recommend reserving and picking up a car here. Most cars are manual so make sure you reserve an automatic if needed. Click here for more info on driving to Positano from the airport.

Southern Italy Guide-Naples

The streets of Naples

We reserved  a car with Sicily car rentals and I ABSOLUTELY would recommend you to stay AWAY from this company the service was terrible, not only for us but for just about everyone in line.

What to do in Naples: Since you’re here you might as well eat some amazing pizza right?

I researched and found an extremely old shop, open since the 1870 said to be The-Best-Shop-Ever. About a 13 minute drive from the airport you will find the famous shop “L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele”. Defined by experts and journalists as “The Sacred Temple of Pizza”. Blocked by a massive crowd of people swarming the streets, you can’t miss it. Parking is impossible. If you’re with someone, drop them off to get a ticket first so you can suck up waiting time while you look for  parking. I paid 4€ for a spot down the street.

With a four hour wait, I assumed it would be the best pizza I’ve ever had. However, after one hour I was over it. After two hours my expectations were through the roof. I’m not going to lie, I just thought the pizza was OKAY. At that time they only had two choices 1) margarita and 2) marinara, your options are limited. We got both. The price was only 5€ for an entire pizza! Great price for sure. The sauce had an almost milky consistency to it. Best eaten hot. Honestly, I could only give it a 6.5.  However, with a history like that you should just try for yourself.

Taste the best pizza in the world and judge harshly, check

After pizza, It’s up to you. You can spend a day in Naples or head straight for the next destinations. Naples can be a bit on the sketchy side especially at night so be mindful of this while walking around. Especially with things in your pockets or open large purses on you side. Keep an eye out, that’s all I’m say’n.

Go Here Next: Pompeii

Ah the forgotten city we’ve all learned so much about. The Pompeii ruins have 5 archaeological sites you can visit, not including Mt. Vesuvius itself. I recommend going very early especially during peak season. Tickets can be sold out by noon. Also please note: They do not accept cards. Cash only. We decided to visit just one site, the main one “Pompeii”. It costs 15€ plus 8€ if you want to get an iPhone audio guide rental. Don’t be bamboozled by all the tour guide men in the front. You don’t need a tour but if you’re more comfortable with that style then go ahead. Pompeii is quiet large and can easily take up to 4 hours to finish. Make sure you hit up a few spots, especially the Colosseum. I had the honor of shooting a commercial there and it’s beautiful.

We only seen one pizzeria inside so I highly recommend bringing snacks. PLUS, there’s a great restaurant outside of the Pompeii ruins you must go to. Once you’re done there, head over to Zi Caterina, a great Italian food restaurant with amazingly cheap pizza.

Go Here Next: Positano

A breathtakingly beauty cliffside village located along southern Italy’s Amalfi Coast.

Positano in November

The town of Positano was our main reason for going to Italy and the location of our hotel. Positano should be your base, other places are easy to access as a day trip from here. For more information on Positano check out my other blog click here

Finish Here: Amalfi

Southern Italy Guide, Amalfi
Similar to Positano but not as big or amazing. Another town located below steep cliffs along Italy’s southwest coast. You can drive or take a boat directly to Amalfi from Positano. By car it takes about 40 mins. Amalfi was very beautiful and lively with many souvenirs shops and great restaurants.

Where to eat

I highly recommend wasting as much time as possible at Da Gemma, a high ranking Italian restaurant worth the money. With an elegant indoor seating area and calm yet beautiful outdoor area, the ambiance was perfectly balanced. All the waiters are highly educated on all matters associated with the restaurant and food so don’t be scurd add to ask questions.

I just knew it was too chewy! Make sure you have a reservation. If the weather agrees with you, try to reserve the outdoor seating. It’s beautiful.

Once again you’re all full and ready to go. You have the option of returning to your home base, Positano and enjoying more time or even take a fairy out to Capri Island from Positano for another southern Italy adventure!
