Kagurazaka, Tokyo, Japan
Hostel UNPLAN
Can’t lie I’m not a huge “hostel” person. Mostly, because of when I think of hostels, I think of dirty, uncomfortable, rundown places with weird people and missing belongings. However, this hostel was anything but that! Formerly a parking garage, they turned the buildings old features into a very trendy setting. Everything is so clean, new and comfortable. I’m not sure if it was just the time in which I came or not, but it seemed they were constantly keeping the place tidy and it really showed! The decor is edgy yet elegant and fresh. Many hostels tend to be warn down and pretty basic due to the low cost, but UNPLAN had all the upgrades!
The service, was simply outstanding. This place truly embodies genuine, Japanese professionalism. And what a diverse bunch! They had Iranian, Filipino, Korean staff that spoke English and Chinese and even a Czech staff member. Almost everyone I met spoke English, making it tremendously easy to get help and ask many questions. The staff members were truly eager to help in anyway. They really try to form a relationship with the guests. This place was super welcoming, involved and friendly. They even post events and hold fun contests to offer free items to guests. Friendly, helpful and efficient, now that is service.
LOCATION
If you’re someone looking for a bit more authenticity and old Japanese culture but you’d like to still been in a somewhat bustling area of Tokyo, this is the place for you! Located in Kagurazaka, an interesting area of Tokyo with many delicious restaurants, traditional shops and cute narrow streets. This town is home to some famous French schools making the food choices here amazing. There’s lots to do and see.
FACILITIES
On the first floor (lobby) you’ll fine the cafe, offering various drink options and surprisingly really delicious food. I tried a breakfast plate and on of the specials. Both were so delicious and well balanced, not to mention photogenic. I also enjoyed a cute heart shaped latte while basking the the sun by the window. I just love the cafes atmosphere.
They have cool, seasonal fusion specials. In fact, the hostel had a steady number of customers coming in not to stay but just to enjoy the cafe. Another cool thing is that they also are in collaboration with a bike rental company. If you wanted to go around the area by bike you can do so by simply renting one from right in front of the entrance.
On the 2nd floor, you’ll find extremely clean bathrooms which conveniently had a nice laundry room as well. This bathroom looked brand new and untouched. I specifically loved the luxurious, large deep bathtub, just amazing!

On the next floor there’s a nice communal area for dinning or to just hanging out. There was kitchen wear, microwave,TV, sofa and a small balcony with a view of Tokyo Skytree!
And finally my favorite was the Roof Top Lounge! The views of all the tiled roofs was so comforting. Relax on one of the lounge chairs or the couch to just get away from it all.
ROOMS
Another good point about this place is their various room styles. Unlike a traditional hostel in Japan, only offering separate sex dorms, they have three room options to pick from. You can stay in a single sex dorm, a mixed sex dorm, or even get a private room. I found this extremely amazing since being separated from friends or someone your dating due to different genders is quite annoying.
The dorms offer free Wi-Fi, a place to hang your laundry, slippers and a charging station in your bunk. The beds were uniquely designed, similar in looks to a capsule hotel, minus the spaceship feeling. There’s a curtain you can close to get more privacy. I didn’t see inside the private rooms but I did notice they came with their own nice sized private balcony!
SUMMARY
In summary, this is by far the best hostel I’ve seen so far. The extremely clean and clutter free spaces really set the mind at ease. All of the upgrades made staying at a hostel super comfortable. I just loved the neighborhood of Kagurazaka and the roof top lounge, cafe and luxurious bathtub makes this place a must try, Click here for current room rates
